About
I'm Joel, boricua pa'que tu lo sepas!
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and ever since High School I' ve had a passion for building products online and experimenting with different technologies. From the moment I created my first website in Yahoo Geocities to building an entire Gaming Network dedicated to Gamers, the journey seems to be just beginning.
Through out my 20+ years of experience I' ve worked in a diverse world of projects and helped all types of companies reach their goals. I' ve also helped other product designers grow as a Team Leader and a Teacher.
Timeline
Present
Working as a Design Engineer for ProspectNow; now a part of Buildout. ProspectNow's platform helps Real Estate Agents, Brokers, among others to find prospective clients by using an algorithm that can predict when a property will resell or refinance within twelve months. I also created and now maintain the design system for Buildout.
2017-2020
During my time at Linux Academy (purchased by A Cloud Guru and subsequently by Pluralsight) I worked as a contributor for the Engineering and Design Team. After needing a bit more structure and with my experience building design teams, I became the Director of Product and help re-organize the company to help all departments work together as we continued to grow.
By the time of my departure the company had grown from around 20 to over 200.
2016-2017
During this period of time I worked as a consultant for various clients helping them establish standards for their design and engineering teams for future growth and scalability. During this time I helped the company that purchased MesotheliomaGuide to continue growing with a new design and engineering team and helping them use user data to continue making the product better for the patients that wouwere looking for more information.
I also worked with ProspectNow laying out a plan for a rebranding of the company and start the prodcess of redesigning their entire platform. Years later, I would join their team full-time to help bring the vision to life.
2013-2016
I worked helping build a startup from the ground up. Together we started building a product called MesotheliomaGuide as a web guide that can help patients and their family members get the best help they need to deal with Mesothelioma. By communicating directly with patients that used our website we were able to develop a strategy to convert the content to be easy to understand and bring resources to get patients with a specialist and financial aid faster.
After our success with MestheliomaGuide we developed another platform called AddictionCenter as well as getting some iOS apps developed for health and fitness.
2009-2013
I started working with the agency Lightmaker as an individual contributor for the design and front-end engineering team. Worked with a variety of clients including, Disney, Pixar, Maria Sharapova, WADA-AMA and the (RED) foundation. I worked with the management to build standards for the front-end engineering team and shortly after became the Lead Front-End Developer for new projects and new clients.
As part of my tenure with Lightmaker we developed a platform called the Virtual Junket that we partnered with Disney to run virtual press junkets for movies, tv shows and music.
2008-2009
After graduating from The Art Institute of Tampa with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Interactive Media Design I started working with a small travel agency as a Graphic Designer and helped bring new graphics and marketing materials for their eco-tours across the norther part of Florida.
After that I worked as a Design teacher for Southwest Technical College for Introduction to Web Design course teaching basics of User Interface Design and Front-End Development.
